John 8

John 8:12–30 (NASB95) — 12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” 14 Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 “You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone. 16 “But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me. 17 “Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true. 18 “I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” 19 So they were saying to Him, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” 20 These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple; and no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come. 21 Then He said again to them, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” 25 So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said to them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning? 26 “I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.” 27 They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me. 29 “And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.” 30 As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.

Title: Knowing the Father through Jesus

  1. According to 3:21, how does man follow Jesus? How is the Light related to life (ref John 1:4; 3:15; 5:21, 26)?  Is this verse an allegory or literal?  Is its meaning spiritual or physical?

  1. Why do Pharisees claim that Jesus’ testimony for himself is not true (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15)?

Deuteronomy 17:6 (NASB95) — 6 “On the evidence of two witnesses or three witnesses, he who is to die shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.

Deuteronomy 19:15 (NASB95) — 15 “A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.

14-15.   What is Jesus’ two-point counter-argument to disqualify the Pharisees?

16-18.  Nevertheless, in these three verses, Jesus uses the standard in Deuteronomy 17:6 and 19:15 to prove His testimony is true.  Who is the second witness Jesus uses here?  Earlier Jesus said a similar thing in John 5:31-36; who is the second witness in that passage?

  1. Jesus made clear in this verse that knowing Him is the only path of knowing God. What is the other often-quoted verse that speaks of this truth and more? What does this say about people who claim to believe in God but not Jesus?

  1. Before this verse how many times did people attempt to seize Jesus? What is the reason they could not do it?

  1. Jesus here warned the Jews that their moment of believing is fleeting. If they chose not to believe, their fate will be sealed in eternal damnation; their faith in God would not help them.  Fast forward to our time, how is this warning still true?

  1. What did the Jews get right and wrong in interpreting Jesus’ words?

23-24.   Jesus explained that He is from above.  In order for the Jews not to perish eternally, what is the belief the Jews need to have (pay attention to the italic He, which means that it was not there in the original text)?

  1. In 5:18, we can see that the Jews clearly understood Jesus’ claim of deity. If that is the case, what is the purpose of their question of asking Jesus to identify Himself in this verse?  (John did not record Jesus answering Caiaphas, saying that He is the Son of God like what it is in Matt 26:63-64.)

26-27.   Jesus reiterated He speaks only what He heard from the Father.  Why is what He says about the Jews a judgment against the Jews?

28-29.   How was Jesus lifted up later on?  Why would that convince people that Jesus is God?  How does Jesus show His obedience to the Father?

  1. We do not know who are the many. Since this was the Feast of Booth, they were likely from different regions outside of Jerusalem.  They probably came forward when Peter preached that Jesus was the Christ during Pentecost in Acts 2:5-11.

John 8:31–59 (NASB95) — 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 “The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 “I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.” 39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham. 40 “But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do. 41 “You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me. 43 “Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. 44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 “But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me. 46 “Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? 47 “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.” 48 The Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 “But I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he will never see death.” 52 The Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste of death.’ 53 “Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’; 55 and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. 56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.” 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

Title: Believing in Jesus

  1. What does Jesus mean by “to continue in My word”? What can we find out in later verses about the Jews who “had believed Him” in this verse being different from the many who “came to believe in Him” in verse 30? How does John explain the difference between the two?

  1. it is important to emphasize the word “know” here is γινώσκω in Greek. It is to know through experience. Here it implies that there would be a transition from dwelling in God’s word to knowing the truth.   How do you think that will happen? Have you experienced being “free” from knowing the truth?  If not, what do you think about this promise?

  1. Truth is a metaphysical subject matter. Why would the Jews switch the focus from metaphysical to political? To whom were the Jews enslaved in the time of Jesus or in other times before that?

  1. Paul echoes the condition of being a slave to sin Rom 7:19-20.  Who is the slave of sin?

Romans 7:19–20 (NASB95) — 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

35-36.    Jesus is saying here a common truth.  While a slave has no legal status in the inheritance (thus not able to remain in the house), the son will remain forever.  Parlaying His authority as the Son, Jesus can make anyone free.  What does that make Jesus and the truth?

  • What is Jesus’ stated reason for the Jews seeking to kill Him? Who is the father of the Jews (hint: v. 44)?

39-40.    Although Jesus agreed that the Jews were the descendants of Abraham, what did the Jews do to disqualify themselves as the children of Abraham spiritually?  What are the deeds of Abraham (Consider Romans 4:2; James 2:21)?

Romans 4:2 (NASB95) — 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

James 2:21 (NASB95) — 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?

41-45.    As Jesus agreed that they were physically but not spiritually the descendants of Abraham, the Jews claimed that they were the descendants of God, the Righteous One. Jesus listed the three consequences if God is our Father.  What are they? Jesus listed three things about Him and the Father.  What are they?  Finally, what are the three natures of the devil listed by Jesus?

46-47.    Was sin an issue that the Jews brought up against Jesus?  If not, what was the reason that they could not hear Jesus?

48           From this point on, the Jews became increasingly hostile.  What are the two accusations from the Jews against Jesus?  What is the Samaritan accusation based on?

49-51.    What are Jesus’ three reasons for showing that He does not have a demon? In so doing, what are the three opposing insufficiency of a demon?

52-53.    What reason did the Jews give for their conclusion that Jesus had a demon?

54-56.    How will Jesus be glorified (ref 7:39)?  How did Abraham see Jesus’ day (ref Heb 11:13)?

John 7:39 (NASB95) — 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Hebrews 11:13 (NASB95) — 13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

57-59.    Why did the Jews want to stone Jesus?
