John 7

John 7:1–39 (NASB95)

1 After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. 3 Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 “For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 For not even His brothers were believing in Him. 6 So Jesus said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. 7 “The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. 8 “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.” 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. 10 But when His brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as if, in secret. 11 So the Jews were seeking Him at the feast and were saying, “Where is He?” 12 There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.” 13 Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews. 14 But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to teach. 15 The Jews then were astonished, saying, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 “If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself. 18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him. 19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did one deed, and you all marvel. 22 “For this reason Moses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 “If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24 “Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” 25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? 26 “Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they? 27 “However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, “You both know Me and know where I am from; and I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 “I know Him, because I am from Him, and He sent Me.” 30 So they were seeking to seize Him; and no man laid his hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come. 31 But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?” 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent officers to seize Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me. 34 “You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 The Jews then said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He? 36 “What is this statement that He said, ‘You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?” 37 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

  1. In here and in John 5:18, it is stated that the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. What are the two reasons that they wanted to kill Jesus? Who are the Jews?

John 5:18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

  1. Is the feast of the booth one of the three required feasts for the Jewish males to be present in Jerusalem?

3-5.        What reason did Jesus’ brothers give to suggest Jesus going to the Feast of Booths in Jerusalem?  Why did the brothers make this suggestion?

  1. What is the time that Jesus refers to? How is the time fixed?  With that understanding of time, what is the meaning of the phrase “your time is always opportune?

  1. Why does the world hate Jesus? Is that true that the world cannot hate you (John 15:18)?

John 15:18 (NASB95) — 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.

8-9.        Jesus’ statements were made specifically about that present moment.  His not going to Jerusalem was not a permanent statement but a delay, so he would not be arrested and put away before His time was up.

10-13.    What is the reason for the Jews to look for Jesus per verse 1?  Why are the crowds afraid to openly discuss Jesus?  What is the minimal harm the Jews could do (John 9:22)?

John 9:22 (NASB95) — 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.

14-15.   Jews value learning from great teachers.  When Paul listed his pedigree in Acts 22:3, he boasted that his teacher was Gamaliel, who was the grandson of the founder of the Hillel sect of Judaism.  The theological opposite of Hillel is Shamai.  But the Talmud is largely based on the opinion of the Academy of Hillel.

There are two ways to interpret this word marveled (ESV & NKJV), astonished (NASB), and amazed (NIV)—positive and negative.  On the positive side, it means that the Jews being disciples of the great teachers were genuinely surprised by how good Jesus’ teaching was.  But I think John means the negative because they also “marvel” at Jesus performing a miraculous healing of the invalid at the Bethesda pool on the Sabbath (7:22).

  1. What is the source of Jesus’ teaching?

  1. What does it take to know Jesus’ teaching?

  1. How does Jesus distinguish Himself from His contemporary teachers?

  1. How did the other teachers violate the Moses’ Law?

20-21.   Jesus reminded the crowd why the Jews sought to kill Him.  What was the deed that earned him the marvel from the Jews  (John 5:1-16)?

  1. Under what circumstance is circumcision performed on the Sabbath (Gen 21:4; Lev 12:3)? How is circumcision not from Moses but from the fathers (Gen 17:10-11)?

Genesis 21:4 (NASB95) — 4 Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

Leviticus 12:3 (NASB95) — 3 ‘On the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

Genesis 17:10–11 (NASB95) — 10 “This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 “And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you.

  1. What was the reason to perform circumcision on the Sabbath? How does that reasoning apply to healing on the Sabbath?

  1. When is judging allowed per this verse?

25-26.   The word some of the people of Jerusalem is Ἱεροσολυμῖτης and appears here and in Mark 1:5.  John makes the description a distinction between the words crowd and the Jews, the two opposites—the Jews who sought to kill Jesus and the crowd who knew nothing.  Here the people were aware that the elites of Jerusalem wanted to kill Jesus and wondered if they hesitated because they were convinced that Jesus is the Christ.

  1. What is the reasoning behind the people of Jerusalem not believing that Jesus is the Christ? What is the OT passage that can be misinterpreted as the mysterious origin of the Christ (Dan 9:25; Mal 3:1)?

Daniel 9:25 (NASB95) — 25 “So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.

Malachi 3:1 (NASB95) — 1 “Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts.

28-29.    Where does Jesus say He comes from?

  1. What was the reason that the Jews could not arrest Jesus?

31-32.   Why did the crowd believe Jesus?  What did that do to the Jews?

33-34.    Where does Jesus intend to go?

37-39.    Jesus is quoting Is 44:3; 55:1; 58:11.   Jesus said similar words to the Samaritan woman in John 4:14.  How was that true for the Samaritan woman?  How is that true for all of us?  How does the Holy Spirit satisfy us?

Isaiah 44:3 (NASB95) — 3 ‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring And My blessing on your descendants;

Isaiah 55:1 (NASB95) — 1 “Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk Without money and without cost.

Isaiah 58:11 (NASB95) — 11 “And the Lord will continually guide you, And satisfy your desire in scorched places, And give strength to your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

John 7:40–8:1 (NASB95) — 40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is the Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the Christ.” Still others were saying, “Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 42 “Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him. 45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.” 47 The Pharisees then answered them, “You have not also been led astray, have you? 48 “No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 “But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them, 51 “Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered him, “You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 Everyone went to his home. 1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
